  • Strengthening Traditional Leadership for Climate Action in Kaduna State: Emir of Zazzau Appointed Climate Ambassador Under WECRI Project

As part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusive climate action and environmental sustainability in Kaduna State, Bridge That Gap (BTG) Hope for Africa Initiative has conferred the honorary title of “Climate Ambassador” on the Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli. The recognition underscores the Emir’s leadership and long-standing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable community development.

The conferment took place during an advocacy visit to the Zazzau Emirate Palace, held as part of activities introducing the Women Empowerment and Climate Resilience Initiative (WECRI). The visit aimed to strengthen partnerships with traditional institutions and secure high-level support for community-driven climate action.

WECRI is a six-month pilot project funded by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) Programme. The initiative seeks to empower women economically while addressing the growing impacts of climate change across Kaduna State.

Speaking during the visit, Zinta Istifanus, Programme Officer at BTG, noted that the conferment reflects the Emir’s proactive role in advancing environmental sustainability within the Zazzau Emirate. She highlighted the importance of traditional leadership in mobilising communities and shaping attitudes towards climate action and sustainable practices.

In his response, the Emir of Zazzau expressed appreciation for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting climate resilience initiatives. He noted that climate change and deforestation pose serious threats to Zaria’s historic environment, including the centuries-old city walls. Demonstrating immediate leadership, the Emir pledged the full support of the Emirate Council and directed District Heads to identify strategic locations for tree planting and environmental restoration activities under the project.

Implemented by Bridge That Gap Initiative in collaboration with the Network of Civil Society in Environment (NCSE), WECRI focuses on vulnerable communities across the three Senatorial Zones of Kaduna State. The project combines advocacy, women’s empowerment, and community-based climate solutions to foster economic resilience, strengthen inclusive governance, and promote a sustainable future for the state.

Through strategic engagement with traditional institutions, government actors, and civil society, BTG continues to bridge the gap between community leadership and climate action—ensuring that local voices, particularly women’s voices, remain central to sustainable development efforts in Kaduna State.
